Distracted Driving Considered a Culprit as Traffic Deaths Increase in First Half of 2016

Traffic fatalities jumped up by 10.4% in the first six months of 2016. A sobering fact that was released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in October. If this trend continues, then this will mean that 2016 will be the highest year on record since 1966 when there were 35,000 traffic fatalities total for the year.

U.S. Highways are becoming more dangerous to drive on and this trend has been rising since late 2014 when the economy started to improve. With the recovery of the economy, more and more people are now driving and going places. Drivers distracted by smartphones and texting is a huge contributor to these alarming increases in fatalities.

During the first half of 2016, 17,775 people died on roads in the U.S., compared with 16,100 in 2015’s same period of the year. Mark Rosekind, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, said:

“We have an immediate crisis on our hands, and we also have a long-term challenge.”

The National Safety Council and other safety groups have come up with a plan and have set a goal of eliminating traffic deaths and injuries in the U.S. within the next 30 years. The Transportation Department has committed $1 million per year for the next three years toward grants for the Zero Death Campaign.
