April Is Distracted Driving Awareness Month

Laser Technology with the advent of TruCam, has since 2009, joined with NHTSA and the law enforcement community to warn drivers about the dangers of distracted driving. I'm reasonably sure most of us have seen a car driving erratically; weaving side to side, slowing and speeding up, completely sure it’s a drunk driver. When you’re finally able to pass you look over to discover the driver is bobbing their head up and down while texting! This is highly disturbing.

Distracted Driving Enforcement Campaign

April has been designated as "Distracted Drivers Awareness Month." According to Melissa Simon of the Times-Standard more than 200 local law enforcement agencies will be looking to crack down on distracted drivers. California Highway Patrolman Matt Harvey said, "Distracted driving in general is the leading cause of traffic collisions for motorist. As technology has developed we've seen an increase in mobile devices, and it's not the only distraction a motorist can have—it can be changing the radio or talking to someone. Really, a distraction is anything that takes your hands off the wheel, eyes off the road or mind off driving."

According to NHTSA, the number of people killed in distraction-affected crashes decreased slightly from 3,360 in 2011 to 3,328 in 2012. An estimated 421,000 people were injured in motor vehicle crashes involving a distracted driver; this was a nine percent increase from the estimated 387,000 people injured in 2011.

When you think about it, that’s 3,328 deaths and 421,000 injuries that could have easily been prevented! This is what's so tragic about dying in this manner and why it's now on the front burner. A few other distractions over and above texting are:

  • Using a cell phone or smartphone
  • Eating and drinking
  • Talking to passengers
  • Grooming
  • Reading, including maps
  • Using a navigation system
  • Watching a video
  • Adjusting a radio, CD player, or MP3 player

So as you're cruising down your local highways and byways and a text notification appears, I would suggest you ignore it until off the road. Chances are the message is trivial and can wait ten minutes! TruCam's high resolution video's ability to document all violations, whether it is speeding, following too close, or texting while driving, you will get nailed--and it will stand up in court! Let's keep our eyes on the road!
